Sweden's in-study work rules changed materially on 11 June 2026, long-standing 'no fixed cap' guidance now only applies to permits granted before that date. Post-study, graduates get up to 12 months to find qualified work, a shorter runway than Germany's 18 months, and Bachelors/Masters time in Sweden does not itself count toward permanent residence the way doctoral time does.

No fixed hour cap
Sweden traditionally had no statutory limit on hours a study-permit holder could work, this remains true only for permits granted before 11 June 2026, until they are extended.
Work while studying, permits from 11 June 2026
Mandatory15 hours/week during term; unrestricted in June, August
Applies to Bachelor's/Master's study permits granted on or after 11 June 2026. Exceptions: education-related work, student-representative roles, administration, traineeships, research or artistic research connected to the programme and based at the institution, these are unrestricted. Also unrestricted once the student has completed a programme of at least two semesters (with a diploma/certificate) and is not applying for a new first/second-cycle study permit.
Post-study job-seeker permit
Up to 12 months (Bachelors/Masters); 12 to 18 months (doctoral)
Must have completed a programme of at least two semesters with passing grades in all courses, and apply before the study permit expires. Full work rights during this permit.
Switching to a work permit after finding a job
Dedicated 'students who have found work' route
A graduate who secures a qualifying job offer can apply to convert directly to a work-based residence permit rather than needing the job-seeker permit first.
Path to permanent residence
Bachelors/Masters time does not count; doctoral time does
Bachelors/Masters graduates build PR eligibility only after moving onto a work permit; PhD students accrue PR-qualifying time during their doctoral studies itself.
Work within the current rules for the permit's grant date
MandatoryCheck whether the student's study permit was granted before or on/after 11 June 2026. Pre-11-June permits keep the historic no-cap regime until extended. From-11-June permits are capped at 15 hours/week in term time, unrestricted in June, August, and unrestricted for education-linked roles (teaching, student-rep work, research/administration tied to the programme) or once ~2 semesters plus a completed programme are behind the student.
Working beyond the applicable cap risks revocation of the residence permit or a refused extension, this is now a real compliance risk where it wasn't before 11 June 2026.Apply for the job-seeker permit at graduation
OptionalAs soon as the student holds proof of having completed a programme of at least two semesters with passing grades throughout, apply for the residence permit to look for work or explore starting a business, up to 12 months for Bachelors/Masters graduates. 'Sweden has no cap on student work hours' was true for years and is still repeated everywhere online, but it stopped being universally true on 11 June 2026. Always ask when a student's permit was (or will be) granted before quoting the work-hours rule.
