Confirm enrolment logistics with the university

MandatoryRegister in relevant student-housing queues (e.g. city/university-affiliated foundations) as early as the university allows, some systems award housing by queue days accumulated, so registering the day admission is confirmed matters. Do not plan to arrive and search cold; the housing shortage in major university cities is severe and a first-hand rental contract can take months to years in some queues.

MandatoryIf the permit covers 12 months or more, the student will register with Skatteverket's Swedish population register and receive a personnummer, giving access to subsidised public healthcare (like a resident). If the permit is for less than 12 months, the student instead needs comprehensive private health insurance covering the whole stay, and typically gets a coordination number (samordningsnummer) rather than a personnummer. Confirm which situation applies before choosing an insurance product.
