Sweden University Admissions: Requirements and Intakes

Universities & admissions

Nearly all Bachelors/Masters admission for international students runs through the single national portal, universityadmissions.se (operated by UHR). Credential recognition is handled by UHR itself (as ENIC-NARIC Sweden), not by a separate agency, a key structural difference from Germany's APS/uni-assist split.

Central application portal

universityadmissions.se (run by UHR)

Covers most Bachelors and Masters programmes across Swedish universities; PhD admission runs directly through the hosting department/university instead.

Degree recognition

UHR's Qualifications Assessment Tool / individual recognition statements

UHR (ENIC-NARIC Sweden) assesses whether a foreign qualification meets Sweden's general entry requirements and what it corresponds to in the Swedish system. This does not itself grant a Swedish qualification, each university still makes its own admission decision.

Indian Bachelors for Masters entry

Case-by-case; confirm per programme

Universities check the specific degree against their own entry requirements (often via UHR's assessment tool as a reference). Some Masters expect a 4-year Bachelors or specific subject credits, never assume a 3-year Indian Bachelors is automatically sufficient.

Doctoral admission route

Conditional

Direct with the university/supervisor, outside universityadmissions.se

PhD positions in Sweden are typically salaried employment, not fee-paying study, recruitment, funding, and the residence-permit track (or a 'permit for research' route) are handled differently from Bachelors/Masters.

Shortlist programmes on universityadmissions.se by level, language and intake

    Recommended

Search the national catalogue for programme level (Bachelors/Masters), teaching language, subject, and intake. For each shortlisted programme, record the specific entry requirements, tuition fee, and the exact application deadline for the intake you want, Swedish admissions are programme-specific, and requirements differ even within the same university.

Always apply in the First admission round if you need a residence permit, it gives the most runway for tuition payment, the permit, and housing.

  2. 2

    Check credential recognition before committing

    Mandatory

Run the student's degree through UHR's Qualifications Assessment Tool (or the individual recognition-statement service if the tool doesn't cover their qualification) to see what it corresponds to in the Swedish system and whether general entry requirements are met. Cross-check against each shortlisted programme's specific requirement, since programme-level requirements can be stricter than the general baseline.

A positive general recognition result does not guarantee a specific programme's admission requirement is met, always check the programme page too.

  3. 3

Apply, upload documents, and pay the application fee

    Mandatory

Submit the application on universityadmissions.se, upload required documents (transcripts, degree certificates, English test result, CV/SOP where asked, and any programme-specific documents), and pay the SEK 900 application fee by the stated deadline. The fee is charged once per semester applied for, regardless of how many programmes are selected within it.

  4. 4

Receive and accept the admission notice; pay the tuition instalment

    Mandatory

Non-EU/EEA fee-paying admits must pay the first tuition instalment to be considered 'finally admitted', this triggers the university's confirmation to the Migration Agency and is a precondition for the residence permit application to begin. Pay it as soon as instructions arrive; delaying it is one of the most common causes of a late or failed permit application.

You get: Confirmed ('finally admitted') status and the university's payment confirmation to Migrationsverket.

The tuition instalment gates the residence permit, not the other way round

Migrationsverket will not begin processing the study residence permit application until the university has confirmed the first tuition instalment is paid. Counsel fee-paying students to treat 'pay tuition' as the very first post-admission action, not something to fit in around the visa timeline.

PhD is a different track altogether

Doctoral study in Sweden is normally salaried employment at the university, not fee-paying study. PhD candidates are outside universityadmissions.se, outside the SEK 900/tuition system, and depending on the case may be routed to a residence permit for doctoral studies or (since a 2026 reform) a residence permit for research if they hold a hosting agreement with an approved research principal. Confirm which track applies before quoting fees or the funds requirement.
