Sweden Student Visa: Process, Documents and Funds
Student visa
Sweden's student 'visa' is technically a residence permit for studies at higher education, applied for through Migrationsverket, either online (e-service) or via paper forms at a Swedish embassy/consulate. A MAJOR rule change took effect 11 June 2026, tightening the regime for permits granted from that date onward.

Pay the first tuition instalment and get the university's confirmation
MandatoryMigrationsverket will not start processing a study residence permit until the university confirms the applicant's first tuition instalment has been paid. Pay it the moment payment instructions arrive after admission, this is the single most time-critical step in the whole Swedish process for fee-paying (non-EU/EEA) students.

MandatoryCore documents: valid passport, admission notice/confirmation, tuition-payment confirmation (or scholarship/exemption evidence), proof of funds meeting the maintenance requirement for the whole permit period, and, for permits under 12 months, proof of comprehensive health insurance. Bank statements must be dated within 4 months of the permit's intended start.

MandatoryBook an appointment to present the passport in person at the Swedish embassy or consulate-general handling the application, where fingerprints and a photograph are taken. This biometrics step is mandatory and is how Migrationsverket produces the residence permit card (UT-card) if the application is approved, book it as soon as the online/paper application is submitted, since appointment slots can run weeks out.

Roughly 2 months for 75% of recent cases, but this varies, apply as early as the tuition/funds/insurance evidence allows. A permit cannot be granted for longer than the passport is valid, so renew an expiring passport before applying. A granted permit is issued together with a residence permit card (UT-card) for permits longer than 3 months, this is the physical ID a student carries in Sweden and is the basis for registering locally after arrival.
When: Apply as early as documents allow; allow ~2 months
For residence permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, Migrationsverket applies: (1) a new 15-hours/week work cap during term time (see Working & staying on), (2) tougher study-progress requirements to qualify for an extension (37.5 credits in year one, 45 credits/year after), and (3) a duty to notify Migrationsverket of the granted address/any address change within 30 days (waived if the student completes Swedish population registration instead). Permits granted before 11 June 2026 keep the old rules until they come up for extension. Always check which regime applies to a given student's permit date.
Unlike some destinations, there is no separate visa channel by institution type, the same residence-permit process applies whether the university is public or private. What differs is the tuition/funds evidence itself (a fee-paying student's file includes the tuition-payment confirmation), not the application channel.
