Italy Student Visa: Process, Documents and Funds
Student visa
Indian students apply for a national (category D) study visa via VFS Global, for the Italian mission (New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru or others per VFS jurisdiction) covering their home state. The visa is issued for entry; it is converted into a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) after arrival.

The standard D-visa fee for study is €50, payable in the INR equivalent; VFS adds a separate service charge. Certain education-purpose applicant categories can qualify for a Schengen-rules fee waiver, confirm current eligibility and the exact amount at the visa appointment.
How to apply
MandatoryVFS Global visa application centre (book appointment online)
Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before travel and no later than about 15 calendar days before the intended departure date, book the VFS appointment as early as the mission allows once the admission letter and Universitaly pre-enrolment are ready.
Assemble the visa file
MandatoryCore documents: valid passport (issued within the last 10 years, 2+ blank pages, valid 3+ months beyond the stay), visa application form + photos, Universitaly pre-enrolment confirmation, university admission letter, Dichiarazione di Valore or CIMEA statement (where required), proof of financial means (€10,179.85/year or €848.25/month for 2026/27), proof of accommodation in Italy (hotel/residence/Airbnb booking for at least the first 15 days is commonly accepted), and health insurance valid from arrival.
Financial-means proof must meet the current year's figure exactly, a stale, lower figure from a previous cycle will be rejected.Book the VFS Global appointment and submit biometrics
MandatoryBook online through the VFS Global Italy portal for the centre serving the applicant's jurisdiction (New Delhi, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Mumbai and other regional centres exist depending on consular jurisdiction). First-time Schengen-area applicants must appear in person for biometrics (fingerprints + photo).

D-visa processing is typically slower than short-stay Schengen visas because of the thorough document review; the embassy advises applying as early as the mission allows once the admission letter and pre-enrolment are ready, and no later than roughly 15 calendar days before departure.

The D visa gets the student into Italy. The right to remain for the length of the course is the permesso di soggiorno, which must be requested locally within 8 working days of arrival, see 'After you land'.
