Before You Fly to Italy: Pre-Departure Checklist

Before you fly

With the D visa stamped, the goal is to land ready to hit Italy's tight post-arrival clock: accommodation confirmed (needed for the permesso application), the document folder organised, and the Sportello Amico kit process understood before day one.

  1. 1

Confirm enrolment steps and outstanding fees with the university

    Mandatory

Follow the university's instructions for finalising enrolment (immatricolazione), some require in-person document verification, others allow it online with in-person confirmation once in Italy. Pay any outstanding regional tax/stamp duty per the university's schedule.

    When: After visa, before departure
  2. 2

    Lock in accommodation before flying

    Mandatory

The visa file needed proof of accommodation for the first weeks; extend that into a firm booking or lease before departure, since the permesso di soggiorno application (via the postal kit) needs a stable address on the forms. University halls (collegi/residenze universitarie) are cheaper and simpler for a first-timer than the private rental market.

Do not fly in relying only on a short hotel booking with no plan for what comes after, the permesso kit needs an address, and private landlords often want a registered lease before providing one.
  3. 3

    Prepare the document folder

    Recommended

Physical folder: passport + visa, university admission letter, Universitaly pre-enrolment confirmation, Dichiarazione di Valore or CIMEA statement, proof-of-funds evidence, health insurance certificate, academic originals + certified translations, passport photos. Keep scanned backups in cloud storage.

You get: A grab-and-go folder covering the permesso application, enrolment, and the codice fiscale request.
  4. 4

Book flights with the 8-working-day clock in mind

    Recommended

Because the permesso di soggiorno request must be filed within 8 working days of entry, plan arrival with enough buffer to find the nearest Sportello Amico post office, collect the kit giallo, and complete it calmly rather than in a rush during the first hectic week.

Arriving 1 to 2 weeks before classes start gives room to sort the permesso kit, codice fiscale, and bank account before academic pressure begins.
