Language Tests for Singapore: IELTS, TOEFL and Alternatives
Language & tests
All instruction is in English, so there is no local-language hurdle like German or French. The two things to plan for are an English-proficiency test (often waivable for CBSE/ISC/State Board students who studied in English medium) and, for many Bachelors applicants, a standardized aptitude test.
Standardized test (Indian Std 12 applicants)

This is the UNIVERSITY admission bar a student is actually screened against, not a lower national/visa floor (Singapore's Student's Pass process sets no separate English-test requirement of its own). NUS's own English Language Test Scores table (updated Nov 2025) states IELTS Academic 6.5 in Overall, Reading, and Writing; equivalents: TOEFL iBT 92 to 93, PTE Academic 62, C1 Advanced 180. NTU/SMU run broadly similar bands (commonly 6.5, sometimes 7.0 for competitive programmes like Law, Medicine, or top MBA tracks) but publish their own tables, confirm per university and programme. Often waived for applicants who completed secondary schooling in English (as most CBSE/ISC/many State Board students did), a university-level waiver, not a blanket rule, so confirm on each programme page.
GRE/GMAT

Check the specific graduate programme, business/management Masters are the most likely to ask for GMAT/GRE.
- Book SAT/ACT/AP sittings early, Indian test centres fill up well ahead of the December, February application window.
- For Masters applicants, budget time for GRE/GMAT if the target programme (especially business, engineering management, or analytics) requires it, this is program-specific, not universal.
- Even though English is the medium of instruction, some scholarship or exchange components may still expect basic proficiency in a second language for specific double-degree tracks, check only if relevant to the shortlisted programme.
