Before You Fly to Singapore: Pre-Departure Checklist

Before you fly

Once the IPA letter is in hand, the priorities are: keep it and the medical report ready to complete formalities quickly after arrival, arrange at least initial accommodation, and get the compulsory insurance and campus enrolment steps lined up so the tight post-arrival window is easy to clear.

  1. 1

Complete the medical examination before or shortly after arrival

    Mandatory

Depending on the university's process, the medical exam (with HIV and X-ray lab tests per ICA's prescribed form) can be done overseas at an approved clinic or after arrival at a university-linked clinic. Confirm which route the university expects and the exact deadline for uploading the report to SOLAR, missing it risks the IPA being withdrawn.

  2. 2

    Secure at least initial accommodation

    Recommended

On-campus halls are the cheapest option but limited and allocated competitively, apply as early as the university allows. If relying on private rental, arrange at least a short-term booking for the first few weeks so there is a stable address on arrival, since campus placement may not be confirmed before departure.

On-campus housing is not guaranteed even for admitted students, have a fallback plan for private/off-campus accommodation.
  3. 3

Book travel to land within the IPA's validity window

    Mandatory

Book flights only once the IPA is issued, and arrive with enough buffer to complete the formalities appointment (booked via SOLAR after the medical report and issuance fee are cleared) before the IPA lapses. Carry the physical IPA letter, original passport, a physical passport photo, and the electronic visit pass notification in hand luggage.

When: Within the IPA's validity period
    • Student's Pass Application for Fulltime Undergraduates (AY2026-27), process notes (PDF), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), reproducing ICA/SOLAR steps
    • Completion of Formalities and Issuance of Student's Pass, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), Singapore
  4. 4

Prepare a document folder + digital backups

    Recommended

Physical folder: passport, IPA letter, admission letter, academic originals and certified copies, SAT/ACT/AP and English test reports, passport photos, and the completed medical report (or proof it will be completed locally). Keep scanned copies in cloud storage as backup.

You get: A grab-and-go folder covering the formalities appointment and university enrolment.
