The University of Auckland's published tables are representative of the sector norm: undergraduate IELTS Academic 6.0 overall/no band below 5.5, postgraduate 6.5 overall/no band below 6.0. Competitive or professional programmes (Medicine, Law, Education, some Health Sciences) commonly sit higher, around 7.0 overall with strict per-section floors. Every university/programme sets its own figure, always confirm the exact number on the specific programme's own admissions page rather than quoting this as a national rule.

TOEFL iBT's new scoring format (launched 21 January 2026) is not currently accepted by non-university tertiary education providers due to a scoring misalignment; pre-2026-format TOEFL scores remain acceptable where TOEFL is accepted at all. University-sector acceptance may differ, confirm with the specific university.
- IELTS Academic is the most widely used and widely accepted test across New Zealand universities; PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT (subject to the 2026 caveat above), and Cambridge English (e.g. FCE) are also used by many providers.
- Book the test with enough runway that results (valid 2 years) still cover the full application-to-enrolment window.
- For borderline scores, ask the university about an in-house English test, foundation/pathway program, or an English-language bridging course before assuming rejection.
There is no single national IELTS cut-off for New Zealand study, bands are set per university and per program level (diploma vs undergraduate vs postgraduate commonly step up). Always confirm the number on the specific program's own page rather than repeating an agent-quoted rule of thumb.
