Canada University Admissions: Requirements and Intakes

Universities & admissions

Canadian admissions are decentralized, no national portal, so recognition and requirements are set by each institution. The one universal gate is that the institution must be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), and increasingly, the specific program must also be checked for PGWP eligibility before the student commits.

Institution must be a DLI

Only Designated Learning Institutions can host study-permit holders

All public primary/secondary schools are automatically DLIs (not separately listed); post-secondary institutions must appear on the official DLI list with a DLI number, which goes on the study permit application.

PGWP eligibility is program-specific, not just institution-wide

Check the DLI list entry for the exact program

A school can be a valid DLI while a specific program or campus is not PGWP-eligible (common at some private colleges and curriculum-licensing arrangements). Confirm before applying, not after enrolling.

Credential recognition

Assessed by each university's admissions office

IRCC does not run a national credential-recognition check for admissions (unlike Germany's APS). Universities may ask for an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from a body such as WES for some Masters/professional programs.

  • WES, credential evaluations (NACES member, IRCC-designated ECA body), World Education Services (WES)

Indian 3-year Bachelors

Accepted by many, but check per program

Many Canadian Masters programs want a 4-year Bachelors or a 3-year Bachelors plus a strong result / bridging year for some fields. This is set program-by-program, not nationally.

  1. 1

Shortlist by program, intake, and DLI/PGWP status together

Start from EduCanada (the official federal study-in-Canada portal) to identify accredited institutions, then verify each shortlisted school and specific program on the official DLI list. For each program record: DLI number, whether the specific program is PGWP-eligible, entry requirements, English test minimum, and application deadline.

Don't shortlist by 'the college is a DLI' alone, some private-college partnership programs are not PGWP-eligible even though the parent institution is designated.

  2. 2

    Confirm English-medium admission requirements

Universities set their own IELTS/other test minimums (there is no national floor). Typical Bachelors requirements run around IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall (no band below ~5.5 to 6.0); typical Masters requirements run 6.5 to 7.0 overall (no band below ~6.0 to 6.5). Competitive programs (engineering, business, health sciences) often ask higher. Always confirm on the specific program page, these are institutional norms, not a legal minimum.

  3. 3

Get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) if the program asks for one

Some Masters and professional programs require a WES (or other NACES-member) evaluation of the Indian degree before admission. For India, WES requires transcripts and the degree certificate to come directly from the university/exam board/ministry (not the student), either sealed and couriered or via an approved digital service. Budget roughly 8 to 10 weeks door-to-door for an Indian applicant.

When: Start as soon as the program is shortlisted, well before the application deadline
    • WES, credential evaluations (NACES member, IRCC-designated ECA body), World Education Services (WES)
No national admissions body, verify each program directly

Unlike Germany's uni-assist/APS system, Canada has no single clearing house or national credential-verification step for admissions. Each university sets its own entry bar, test minimums, and document list. A counsellor must check the specific program page for each application, every time, assumptions from one Canadian university do not transfer to another.
