Before you fly
Once the MVV is stamped, the priorities are: secure a real, registerable address (this gates almost everything after landing), pre-book first-week appointments where possible, and travel with the paperwork the sponsor and municipality will both ask for.
Lock down housing before you book flights
MandatoryYou need a fixed, registerable address to complete municipal (BRP) registration within days of arrival, and Dutch student housing is in genuine short supply in every major university city. Prioritise university-affiliated or Studentenwerk-style housing where available, and get written confirmation of the address and move-in date from the landlord before finalising travel dates.
Do not fly in without a confirmed, registerable address, without it you cannot complete the BRP/BSN registration that unlocks a bank account, DigiD, and (if applicable) Dutch health insurance.Time your arrival around the registration deadline
MandatoryMunicipalities require registration (BRP) within days of moving in, commonly cited as within 5 days, so arrive with enough buffer before term start to book and attend a Gemeente (town hall) appointment, which in busy cities can itself have a multi-week wait for a slot.
Book the Gemeente registration appointment online as early as the municipality allows, in Amsterdam in particular, slots can run 6 to 8 weeks out.Arrange health cover valid from your arrival date
MandatoryYou need proof of valid health insurance from the day you land. Students who will not work should arrange private international student insurance before departure (typically 鈮堚偓50 to 120/month) rather than assuming it can wait until after arrival, see 'After you land' for the full rule, including the trap of switching to Dutch insurance once you start working.
Prepare a document folder for the university and the Gemeente
RecommendedPhysical + scanned copies: passport with the MVV sticker, admission/enrolment confirmation, proof of funds documentation used for the visa, health insurance certificate, academic originals and certified copies, and passport photos. Both your university (for enrolment/matriculation) and the Gemeente (for registration) will ask for overlapping but not identical document sets.
