Italy student visa documents

Original passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, remain valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended stay, and contain at least 2 blank visa pages. Submit the original plus a photocopy with the visa application.

Non-EU applicants for Bachelor's, Master's and single-cycle degree courses (e.g. Medicine, Architecture, Law) must complete pre-enrolment on the UNIVERSITALY portal before an Italian university can validate their admission. VFS Global requires the resulting pre-enrolment summary at the visa appointment.

CIMEA can verify that a foreign degree or school-leaving certificate was genuinely awarded, cross-checking with the issuing institution and confirming legalisation stamps and format. Submit apostilled original transcripts/mark sheets and the final degree or school certificate.

An informative document recording the qualification held and duration of study, issued either by the competent Italian Consulate as a Declaration of Value or by CIMEA as a Statement of Comparability, depending on what the enrolling institution asks for.

The study-visa checklist for Indian applicants requires proof of knowledge of the course language, Italian or English, at a minimum B2 CEFR level. For English-medium programmes this can also be evidenced through the Universitaly Pre-Enrolment Certificate.

Consulate checklists for Indian applicants require proof of financial support of no less than roughly €6,079.45 for one year of stay (about €506.62 per month), documented via an original 6-month bank statement plus proof of income, or a sponsor's equivalent documents.

Non-EU students staying over 90 days must apply for a National (Type D) study visa through VFS Global. The national study visa fee is 50 euro, separate from the VFS Global service charge paid on appointment day.

Type-D visa holders must convert their visa into a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) within 8 working days of first entering Italy, using the post-office "kit giallo" system.

Medical insurance covering at least 30,000 EUR, valid for the first 6 months of your stay, and it must carry a repatriation clause. A policy without that clause is rejected even if the cover amount is right.

Original degree certificates and transcripts/mark sheets must be state HRD-attested and then apostilled by India's Ministry of External Affairs before they can be used for a Declaration of Value or CIMEA check. The MEA charges Rs. 50 per document/page, plus the outsourced agency's service fee.

Proof of somewhere to stay in Italy covering at least the first 30 days: a hotel booking, a signed rental agreement, or accommodation provided by your university or institute. The 30-day floor is what the Indian consulate checklist sets; a few nights is not enough.
