Applying to universities
Applications go directly to each university (or via the Common App/Coalition App where the school participates), there is no country-wide clearinghouse like uni-assist. Fall is the dominant intake; deadlines cluster from November (Early Decision/Action) through January (Regular Decision), with public and rolling-admission schools sometimes later.
Fix the intake and each program's exact deadline
Decide Fall (starts Aug/Sep, the main intake) or Spring (starts Jan, a smaller, secondary intake at many schools). Then record the exact deadline for each program: Early Decision/Early Action commonly falls 1 to 15 November, Regular Decision commonly 1 to 15 January, and some public universities or rolling-admission programs run later or on a rolling basis. Deadlines are set independently by each university, there is no single national date.

MandatoryOnce admitted and the student confirms enrollment (and, for many schools, submits proof of financial ability), the SEVP-certified school issues Form I-20, the single most important document for the F-1 visa application. Only a designated school official (DSO) can issue this.
You get: Form I-20, endorsed and signed, required before paying the SEVIS fee or filing the DS-160.
