Document checklist
Sweden student visa documents
8 documents an Indian student needs for a Sweden student visa, 6 of them required of every applicant. Each one says what it is, how to actually get it (where to book, the fee, the lead time), and links to the official page behind it. Where the authority states the requirement in its own words we quote that sentence, so you can confirm it yourself rather than taking our word or an agent’s.
Identity
Valid passport
RequiredYou must possess a passport that remains valid for the entire duration of your permit.
How to get it
Renewed through Passport Seva at its own fee if needed, allowing several weeks including police verification. The permit cannot outlast the passport, so a passport expiring mid-course shortens the permit rather than the other way round. Check this before you pay tuition.
“You can never be granted a permit for longer than your passport is valid.”
Read the official pageDocument visibility and clarity
RequiredYou must submit correctly made copies of your passport and other documents. Ensure all information is clearly visible.
How to get it
Free, and the cheapest way to lose weeks. Every scan you upload to the Migration Agency's online application must be complete and legible: all four corners visible, every page included, and both sides where a document is double-sided. Photograph or scan them in daylight at full resolution rather than using a phone snap of a folded page. A rejected upload restarts the decision clock, which in peak season means weeks.
“Make sure that the information in the documents you include is clearly visible.”

Academic
Admission to full-time studies
RequiredYou must be finally admitted to full-time studies in Sweden. Distance learning is not accepted.
How to get it
Confirmed by the Swedish higher education institution, at no charge to you, and it must be FINAL rather than conditional admission to full-time study. In Sweden final admission follows tuition payment, so the two steps are really one. If your studies will run under three months you should not apply for a residence permit at all.
“You must be finally admitted to full-time studies in Sweden. You cannot be granted a residence permit for distance learning as a form of study.”

Financial
Tuition fee payment
RequiredYou must pay any required tuition fees to the university prior to applying for your residence permit.
How to get it
Paid directly to the Swedish higher education institution, at the tuition that institution sets, and before you apply for the permit. This is the gate: you are only FINALLY admitted once it is paid, and the institution then notifies the Migration Agency itself. Allow a week or more for an international transfer from India to clear, because nothing else can start until it does.
“You are only considered to be finally admitted once you have paid your tuition fee.”
Read the official pageMaintenance requirement funds
RequiredYou must prove you can support yourself financially with at least SEK 10,656 per month (for 2026 applications) for the entire permit duration.
How to get it
At least SEK 10,656 a month for applications made in 2026, against SEK 10,584 for 2025, covering the whole period you are applying for. Shown from your own bank assets, which is separate from and additional to tuition.
“The maintenance requirement is at least SEK 10,656 per month, if you applied in 2026”
Read the official pagePersonal bank statement
If it appliesIf supporting yourself through personal bank assets, provide a bank statement issued no more than four months before the residence permit takes effect.
How to get it
Obtained from your own Indian bank, usually free or a nominal charge, and the timing rule is the trap: it must be issued no more than four months before the date you want the permit to take effect. Request it late rather than early, and re-issue it if your application slips past that window.
“Credit, funds or shares are not approved as personal bank assets. Assets in a microfinance bank are also not approved.”

Visa
Passport presentation and fingerprints
RequiredYou must present your passport and provide your fingerprints and a photograph to receive a decision on your permit.
How to get it
Photograph and fingerprints are taken at a Swedish mission or its service provider in India after you apply online; bring the passport itself. There is no charge beyond the application fee, but appointment slots are the bottleneck in peak season, so book as soon as you are invited.
“Before we can make a decision about a residence permit, you need to present your passport.”

Health
Comprehensive health insurance
If it appliesIf your studies are shorter than one year, you need a comprehensive health insurance policy covering emergency, hospitalisation, dental care, and home transportation.
How to get it
Required if your admitted studies last less than one year; a year or more and you are generally covered once registered in Sweden. If your institution does not provide cover you must have, or have applied for, your own policy, bought from an insurer at its own premium. Arrange it before you apply, since even the 'have applied for' route needs a policy already in progress.
“If you have been admitted to studies that will last less than a year, you need comprehensive health insurance.”

2 of these are conditional: needed only if the situation described applies to you. Read each one rather than assuming, since the conditions are where applications get delayed.
