Norway student visa documents

Identity
Valid Indian Passport
RequiredValid passport with at least 3 months validity remaining beyond the intended stay in Norway, including copies of all stamped, visa, and personal data pages.
How to get it
Renewed through Passport Seva if needed, at the fee Passport Seva sets, and allow several weeks including police verification. It has to be with you at the VFS appointment, since the permit is linked to it.

RequiredTwo recent passport-sized color photographs (35mm x 45mm) taken against a light background, strictly meeting ICAO/Schengen photo standards.
How to get it
Any photo studio in India can take them, typically a few hundred rupees and ready the same day, but the specification is strict: the face photographed from the front against a light background, to ICAO and Schengen standards. Bring them to the VFS appointment. Cheap, quick, and the most common reason an otherwise complete file is handed back.

Academic
Unconditional Offer of Admission
RequiredOfficial letter of admission to a full-time study programme at an accredited Norwegian university, university college, or higher education institution.
How to get it
Issued free by the Norwegian institution, and it must be admission to an approved full-time programme, not a conditional or part-time place. UDI will not accept anything less, so do not submit while a condition is outstanding. Norwegian admission rounds close months before the intake, which makes this the step that sets your whole timeline.

RequiredOfficial educational diplomas, degree certificates, and mark sheets (Class 10, 12, Bachelor's degree). Documents not in English or Norwegian must include certified translations.
How to get it
Certified copies of your degree and transcripts, ordered from your Indian university at its own charge and usually taking weeks, in English or with a certified translation paid to the translator. Where NOKUT recognition is needed it is a separate application with its own processing time, and NOKUT assesses the level of the qualification rather than its academic content.

Financial
Proof of Financial Means (Norwegian Bank Deposit)
RequiredDocumented proof of sufficient living funds amounting to NOK 170,368 per academic year (NOK 15,488 per month) for 2026-2027 (or NOK 166,859 for 2025/2026), deposited into the university deposit account in Norway.
How to get it
For a full academic year you must document at least NOK 15,488 a month, which is NOK 170,368 for the year. For a single semester it is NOK 77,440 for autumn or NOK 92,928 for spring. The money must sit in a Norwegian bank account or the educational institution's deposit account, which means arranging the transfer with the university before you apply, not after.

RequiredOfficial receipt proving payment of tuition fees to the Norwegian educational institution for the academic year, or proof of additional funds covering tuition fees.
How to get it
Paid directly to the Norwegian institution at the tuition it sets, with the receipt kept for the file; if you are exempt from tuition the institution must confirm that in writing. Allow a week or more for the transfer from India to clear. Paying tuition does not replace the maintenance requirement, so budget NOK 170,368 on top of the course cost.

Visa
UDI Application Cover Letter & Fee Payment Receipt
RequiredPrinted and signed UDI Cover Letter received after completing the online study permit application and paying the non-refundable UDI fee of NOK 6,300.
How to get it
Register and pay the application fee in UDI's own portal under My Applications; the application is not treated as complete until the fee is paid, so a submitted-but-unpaid file simply sits there. Print the cover letter and the payment receipt and take both to the VFS appointment. Drafts you never submit are deleted after six weeks.

RequiredPersonal submission of passport, UDI application checklist, and biometric data (fingerprints and photo) at a VFS Global Norway application centre in India.
How to get it
Book at a VFS Global centre in India once you have submitted and paid in the UDI portal; VFS charges its own service fee on top of the UDI application fee. Bring the cover letter, receipt, passport, photographs and the full document set. Appointment availability, not UDI processing, is usually the binding constraint in peak season.
