Nearly all Irish programmes are taught in English, so the English-language certificate is the main gate. Note carefully: the IMMIGRATION SERVICE's minimum for the visa itself is commonly reported as lower than what most universities actually require for admission, but do not treat any specific band as settled without checking the current ISD page, since meeting a university's requirement does not automatically mean the visa file's own (separately assessed) English requirement is satisfied, or vice versa.

Third-party sources commonly cite IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent) as the immigration-file floor for degree programmes, separate from and lower than most university admission requirements, but this guide does not treat that as confirmed on the ISD page itself, verify it directly rather than quoting it as settled. Certificates are generally only accepted within 2 years of the course start date.
University entry (Bachelors)

Trinity College Dublin's standard undergraduate entry is IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band (higher-demand courses ask 7.0/6.5); UCD's minimum is the same 6.5 overall / 6.0-in-every-component. A few programmes elsewhere accept 6.0 overall. Never treat one university's cut-off as a national rule, always confirm on the specific course page.
University entry (Masters)

Which alternative tests are accepted for the VISA specifically (as opposed to the university) is narrower, check the current ISD list before booking a test purely for immigration purposes.
- Treat the visa-office minimum and the university's admission requirement as two separate bars, clearing one does not clear the other.
- GRE/GMAT are not broadly required; some competitive Masters/MBA programmes ask for them, check the specific programme.
- Book the English test early enough that the certificate is still within its validity window (commonly 2 years) at both the application stage and the later visa-application stage.
